Covid vaccines will now be offered to all 16 and 17-year-olds in the UK, without consent of their parents. Just two weeks ago, government experts had advised that only those children with underlying health conditions or living with someone who is deemed at risk should be offered a vaccination.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) reversed their advice on Wednesday, recommending that 16 and 17 year olds should be offered their first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab. Deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van Tam, said, ”I would expect this programme will start in a very short number of weeks.”
This came about after the JCVI examined the recent increase in infections, new data on the safety of vaccines and the excellent progress of the adult inoculation programme. Advice on when to offer a second dose for 16 and 17-year-olds will be recommended after emerging data has been investigated.
The UK will now follow other countries including the United States, Israel and France who have started to vaccinate older teenagers against COVID-19. Vaccinations for healthy 12- to 15-year-olds are not currently recommended but it is likely that JCVI advice will change as more data is studied. Nevertheless, the Pfizer vaccine has already been approved for use for 12 to 17-year-olds by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
